The number "37210" is hand written on back. It depicts a charming scene in what looks like Normandy (France) with a girl in traditional costume herding cows through a village of thatched roof, half-timbered houses and barns. The painting is not dated. It is done in gouache or acrylic on Masonite board and measures approximately 9 x 12. It comes in a wood frame with blue and gold finish that measures about 11 x 14 overall. One small blemish in the paint near the upper edge that could be touched up, but is almost entirely hidden by the frame edge (I slipped the painting down in the frame so you could see it in the last picture). Layne was born in Berkeley. California and received his art training at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
His commercial art career began in a display studio in Chicago. Three years later he came back to. And joined the background department of the Walt Disney Studio. After several years he left the studio to return to free-lance commercial art. These years were spent in doing illustrations for calendars, including many for Brown & Bigelow (Layne estimates he painted at least 650).
